Chancellor's Initiatives

Success. Competitiveness. Sustainability. Three for the Future.

Chancellor William E. Kirwan has launched three USM initiatives to address the major challenges to Maryland's educational preparedness, economic leadership, and environment.

The Closing the Achievement Gap Initiative addresses the threat posed by the state's widening college retention and completion gap for lower income and underrepresented students and the need to ensure that all Marylanders have the opportunity for educational attainment that leads to success.

The STEM and Competitiveness Initiative is developing strategies that strengthen STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education at the K-12 level, prepare a highly-skilled workforce for STEM-based jobs, and promote the innovation and entrepreneurship necessary to position Maryland for leadership in today's global knowledge economy.

The Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change Initiative is developing sustainable practices, policies, and programs to make USM and its 13 institutions leaders in educational and institutional responses to the challenge of global climate change.
