JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, assists with surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and equipment in an operating room.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1. Assists in the preparation of the operating room and in the selection of surgical instruments by reviewing the surgeon preference list and conferring with the nurse on duty.
2. Assists with counting needles, sponges, and instruments to assure compliance with regulatory standards.
3. Assists with preoperative preparation of patients such as skin preparation and draping and positioning patients for procedures in accordance with departmental procedures and protocol.
4. Assists in a variety of complicated and routine surgical procedures by handling instruments to the surgeon as requested or required, preparing suture material for use, and assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team.
5. Performs various duties associated with basic patient care such as delivering specimens to clinical laboratories, escorting and transporting patients, checking emergency carts for needed supplies, and performing minor housekeeping.
6. Assists in the preparation of supplies for sterilization by washing and wrapping instruments. Operates steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers and ultrasonic washers to clean and sterilize instruments.
7. Assesses the environmental needs of the area and recommends and/or initiates appropriate action in coordination with professional staff.
8. Assists with the orientation of Operating Room Technicians by explaining department policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED plus successful completion of an approved Operating Room Technician training program.
EXPERIENCE: One year related experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of universal blood and body fluids precautions and aseptic technique. Basic knowledge of patient care skills such as bathing, weighing, and taking and recording vital signs. Ability to learn and apply various patient care techniques such as routine nursing practice and infection control. Ability to stand and/or walk for up to 100% of the scheduled work time. Ability to independently push and/or pull wheelchairs, beds, and related equipment. Ability to independently lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to lift, with assistance, position and/or otherwise assist patients. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be CPR certified. May require weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine the ability to perform the job.
