University of Maryland, College Park, USM's flagship institution, is the state's premier center of research and graduate education. The university is ranked among the nation's top 20 public research universities by U.S. News & World Report, with 30 academic programs in the top 10 and 91 in the top 25. The faculty includes three Nobel Laureates, seven Pulitzer Prize winners, and scores of Fulbright scholars. In addition, the university boasts the national centers for terrorism, languages, and nano science and engineering. In October 2006, the university launched "Great Expectations, The Campaign for Maryland" - a landmark effort to raise a record $1 billion in private support, the largest goal ever pursued by a public institution in the state of Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area.
