University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, or UMBI, is Maryland's premier biotechnology institute with expertise in human health, the marine environment, agriculture, protein engineering, and structural and systems biology. By leading and partnering with other USM institutions and other organizations, UMBI conducts groundbreaking research in key areas of biotechnology, makes fundamental discoveries, generates innovative solutions to practical problems, develops new technologies for commercial applications, and promotes economic growth. UMBI comprises four research centers: Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (Rockville), Center for Biosystems Research (Rockville/College Park), Center of Marine Biotechnology (Baltimore), and the Medical Biotechnology Center (Baltimore).
