Maryland's only public health, law, and human services university, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, or UMB, features a unique mix of professional schools and a graduate school. Established as the College of Medicine in 1807, UMB is the founding campus of the University System of Maryland and awards nearly 61 percent of all first professional degrees in the state. UMB includes schools of medicine, law, dental, pharmacy, nursing, social work, and public health. The university is also a major biomedical research institution. With dedication to leadership and excellence in education, research, public service, and patient care, UMB's external research awards totaled nearly $517 million in fiscal year 2009, more than doubling its research enterprise since FY 2000. For every $1 that UMB receives from the state, it creates more than $15 in economic activity. Entrepreneurial efforts at UMB continue to expand. Innovative spirit is driving the development of the University of Maryland BioPark, a 10-acre campus that will boast 1.8 million square feet in laboratory and office space in 12 buildings.
